INSPIRING STORY - 1 ( PARENTS OF 80 CHILDREN )

“I already have 20 kids Archana” Ashok said this to Archana when they were deciding to get married. Ashok Deshmane the founder of Snehwan has devoted his life to the betterment of the children of drought-affected farmers. The year was 2016 when he was a mere 25 when he quit the lucrative IT job and decided to work for the upliftment of underprivileged children. His Idea behind Snehwan was that the ‘Annadatas’ (the food providers) are in trouble so their children. There are many issues like a drought in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra where farmers suicide has become a daily bulletin. He was from a poor family of a farmer and only because of education he was able to lift himself from the darker days. Hence it became his aim that instead of enjoying the air-conditioned rooms and partying, he would adopt underprivileged children and give them access to education.

Ashok was inspired by the work of Dr Prakash Amte. Initially, he started working night shifts and saved money for children’s education. But later he felt this pious work should be done full-time. Dr Smita Kulkarni and Dr Ravindra Kulkarni from Pune donated their two acres of land for Snehwan. This motivated Ashok even more and with donations from corporates, he started many projects like SWAMI VIVEKANAND DNYANALAY, VANCHITGRAM, KAMDHENU GOUSHALA, DNYANCHATRA, AGRICULTURE BASED ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM. (ABEP) and many more. Apart from formal education yoga, sports and extra curricular were also introduced to children.

Archana Ashok’s wife has given her full life to this cause. She was just 21 years old when she married Ashok and decided to be a mother to many children. In the year 2021 Ashok and Archana are taking care of 80 children. Out of them 30 lives in slums and 50 stays in Snehwan.

When asked about Snehwan to Ashok he says “Education brings you out from the poverty. It is my own experience. I want these children to grow up and not only be self-sufficient but also work for our country. We just cannot show our nationalism only on 15th August and 26th January. We need to work for our country on a day-to-day basis, then only our country and its people will prosper. Everyone must participate to make our India better.”
